The overarching theme of our research is to decipher the molecular and biochemical regulatory mechanisms underlying organelle-to-nucleus retrograde signaling that is essential in sustaining cellular homeostasis and for adaptation to changing environmental conditions. We are especially interested in understanding how chloroplasts sense environmental fluctuations and communicate with other subcellular compartments to reprogram cellular homeostasis. Our long-term goals are to decipher chloroplast-generated chemical languages, triggering distinct stress responses to a multitude of environmental factors, thereby ultimately improving stress tolerance of crop plants.
